Unit price is just the entry ticket. Total cost is what you actually pay. Anyone quoting you a per-tooth number without asking about service hours isn't giving you a comparison — they're giving you a pitch.
3. Lead Time: The Dimension Nobody Compares Until It Bites
This is where I spend most of my working hours.
In March 2024, a client called at 4 p.m. on a Friday needing 24 bucket teeth for a wheel excavator scheduled back on site Monday morning. Normal turnaround from their usual supplier was 10 days. We found a distributor with stock, paid $740 in rush freight on top of a $2,100 base cost, and delivered Saturday before noon. The real question isn't OEM or private label. It's: who actually casts this part, and to what spec? Get that answer and the decision usually resolves itself.
Two technical anchors worth holding yourself to: surface hardness at the wear point, tested per ISO 6508 (Rockwell) or ISO 6507 (Vickers), and the alloy spec — typically referenced to ASTM A128 for manganese steels. Any supplier who can't name both isn't worth a purchase order.

Run a hybrid when: critical machines get OEM and everything else gets private label — but only if both suppliers pass the same spec and traceability checklist. Otherwise you're just guessing on half your fleet and calling it a strategy.
And whatever you pick, price it over the full service life, not the invoice. In four years of doing this, I have not once seen the cheapest quote on the page turn out to be the cheapest part on the machine.
