  4. Check compliance claims before you repeat them to a customer. Whether it's “recyclable,” “OEM quality,” or “made in USA,” you need evidence. The FTC expects claims to be truthful and substantiated, and your customer probably does too.

That last one is the one I'm most embarrassed about. I almost put a “recyclable” label on 600 boxes without any proof. A customer asked the right question, and I had to admit I didn't know. Don't be me. Ask before you promise.

Small excavator compliance requirements are not limited to engines and emissions. They apply to the whole supply chain—attachments, packaging, documentation, and labeling. If you buy from a supplier who doesn't understand that, you become the person who has to deliver the bad news. I can tell you from experience: that's not a fun call to make.

Final Thoughts

Here's what I believe now, after losing money and almost losing a customer: the vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—is usually the one who costs less in the end. The unproven low price might be real, or it might be the first page of a very expensive book. In my experience, it's usually the second.

I still compare offers. I still look for savings. But I compare the total cost and the compliance picture, not just the unit price. And if a supplier makes me ask “what's not included,” I now treat that as a warning sign.

ESCO bucket teeth weren't the cheapest option in that emergency. They were the option that made sense once I counted the full cost of a failed order. That's the kind of math I wish I had done before the customer called.
