Bottom line: if you're sourcing ESCO bucket teeth or evaluating an excavator OEM, don't start with unit price. Start with wear life per dollar. In more than six years of tracking every attachment order in our procurement system, the 'low-price' options have cost us 15–20% more by the time we account for reorders and idle hours. Wear life per dollar is the metric that separates a good buy from a bad one.
I'm a procurement manager at a 38-person excavation and demolition company. I manage roughly $400,000 a year in buckets, teeth, adapters, cutting edges, and related hardware. - Who owns the machine's wear parts? If the OEM doesn't know their own adapter system, I don't need their machine.
- How long has this manufacturer supported older models? Call the parts desk and see if they treat you like a nuisance or a customer.
Here's how to evaluate used excavator manufacturers specifically: start with the age of the machine. A 10-year-old excavator is only worth what it can earn. If the OEM has discontinued the model or stopped stocking parts, every repair becomes a scavenger hunt. The machine might be priced 30% below market, but that's exactly the kind of 'savings' that disappears when the excavator sits waiting for a part.
I learned this one the hard way with a used machine we bought in 2023. The price was great. The parts situation was not. We spent an entire week trying to find a hydraulic hose. Actually, we didn't find it—we had a local shop fabricate one. That's when I added 'call the parts desk before you buy' to our evaluation process.
If You're a Mini Excavator OEM, This Matters More
Contractors buy parts for themselves. As an OEM, you buy parts to put your name on. Every time a mini excavator's bucket tooth wears out fast, the customer doesn't blame the tooth manufacturer—they blame the machine. That's why I'd choose a supplier with documented performance over a cheaper box of parts. The extra upfront cost may not pay back. If your business model is built around the absolute lowest PO, then buy the budget teeth—just don't pretend they're the same.
I'm also not saying any manufacturer should guarantee fit on every machine. That's not realistic. Older machines with custom mounting systems may need a bracket or adapter conversion, and that adds cost. My rule is simple: if the conversion costs more than the machine is worth, don't convert.
So when does the cost-per-hour approach fall apart? When you don't have enough operating hours to make the math matter. A rental fleet that runs a machine 40 hours a month might be better off with a lower-cost tooth replaced once a year. But for us, running 1,000+ hours per machine, the calculation has a clear answer.
